AWARDS Michael Smout recognised as a JCU Rising Star

Dr Michael Smout of the Centre For Biodiscovery & Molecular Development of Therapeutics has been awarded a $15,000 grant as part of JCUs Rising Stars ECR Leadership Program.

Mic’s research, as described in Under the Microscope No.11,  explores the biological mechanisms of the venom from the deadly Thai liver fluke. He has also studied the venoms of box jellyfish, sea snakes, stonefish and scorpions.

The Rising Stars Early Career Researcher (ECR) Leadership Program provides advanced professional development to fast-track the careers of JCU's future research leaders. It is an elite program with a cohort of 5-10 ECRs selected biennially on a competitive basis.

Grants are intended to help fast-track recipients' prospects of becoming competitive, independent researchers by supporting recognised research outputs, including (but not limited to) publications in superior journals and/or competitive project and/or fellowship applications, including (but not limited to) Australian Research Council (ARC) or National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) programs or industry funding.
