Hologenome sequencing of the indo-pacific reef building coral, Porites lutea, illuminates the roles of critical microbial symbionts

Although corals are known to form an intimate association with a community of Bacteria and Archaea, the nature of these interactions is poorly understood. Analysis of 52 microbial population genomes recovered from metagenomic sequencing of the reef building coral, Porites lutea, highlight several metabolic and physical mechanisms by which the coral, Symbiodinium, and microbial community may interact. This presentation is intended to serve as a general introduction to genomic analysis of potential microbial symbionts.
