Research interests focus on contemporary approaches to social impact assessment; community participation in environmental management; and social change in urban and rural settings. A particular interest is in the use and development of qualitative research  methods to approach complex environmental, disaster management and planning issues. A variety of research activities have led to the development of methodologies which enhance community involvement in disaster planning, recovery and resilience.

Reports, pamphlets, and posters developed through my research on communities and disasters have influenced government and non-government agencies in delivery of emergency preparedness, recovery and training.

Teaching activities include social impact assessment, disaster studies, cultural aspects of environmental issues, community studies and qualitative social research methods. Recently developed a Graduate Certificate in Emergency Management.
