About

Dr Amar Sholapurkar is employed as a full time Lecturer in Clinical Dentistry & Oral Radiology and is the Department lead of Oral Radiology section at the College of Medicine and Dentistry, James Cook University (JCU), Cairns. QLD, Australia . He is actively involved in clinical research focusing on comparing the efficacy of three antibiotics in the treatment of severe periodontal disease. This challenging research idea led him enroll into a part-time PhD (at JCU Cairns campus) and successfully apply for two external research grants (ADRF and APRF). He is also appointed as "Radiation safety officer" and "Possession licensee" of the JCU dental clinics. Cairns. He has completed his Masters in Oral Medicine and Radiology at the prestigious Manipal University, India. His career started in Manipal University as a Assistant Professor (Senior Lecturer) followed by Reader in the department of Oral Medicine and Radiology. He also worked (involved in teaching and research) at University in the Middle east for couple of years. He has more than 14 year teaching(for both  undergraduates and postgraduates) and research experience till date.                           

Over the past few years, he has received accreditation (from various Radiation health departments like Victoria, Queensland, NT, Tasmania, WA, SA etc) and running the Cone beam Computed tomography licensing course and Extraoral Radiography licensing course across Australia. He is also actively involved in conducting Dental Radiology workshop titled “Tips for Interpreting and diagnosing everyday problems from dental radiographs” across Australia till date.

The exemplary approach to supporting two of his honour student learning is evidenced by their publication, conference presentation and cumulative score above 85%. He has published more than 50 articles in reputed peer reviewed dental journals; have contributed 11 chapters in book and has extensive conference presentations. He has published (edited) a book titled – “PUBLISH AND FLOURISH – Practical Guide for effective scientific writing” and selected in the editorial board/peer review committee of about 4 Dental Journals. Furthermore, he has also delivered Guest lectures/keynote lectures in Dental conventions/International speciality conferences/Continuing Professional Development activities in Australia and abroad.

Interests
Research
  • Since Dr Sholapurkar have an overseas dual qualification (Oral Medicine and Radiology), his research interests include from both areas. From Oral Medicine point of view, his special interest is focussed on comparing the effectiveness of various medicaments in bacterial and fungal infections, in regard to which he has published papers and presented in International conferences. His research career is also focused on Prevalence of Oral mucosal disorders. He is also interested in Oral manifestations of elderly Diabetic patients. He is a regular contributor of challenging cases in the general dental literature, and has published numerous papers with the aim of increasing awareness of accurate diagnosis (both clinically and radiographically) of various lesions in the mouth. In regard to the Oral Radiology component, his research career has focused on Radiographic prevalence of anatomic and pathologic entities in the Oral and Maxillofacial regions. His special interests before the advent of higher imaging modalities were, the Maxillary Sinus Findings/pathologies in the Elderly, Condylar Changes and Its Association with Age/Temporomandibular joint disorders, panoramic radiographic study of mental foramen. Interpretation of dental radiographs and applications of advanced diagnostic imaging in dentistry is among his field of expertise. Since the advent of Cone Beam Computed tomography (CBCT), Dr Sholapurkar is now keen and hoping to develop a program on the CBCT and conduct research relating to it.

  • 2017 - Our poster titled ‘An Investigation of Radiation Protection Knowledge, attitudes and Practices of North Queensland Dentists.’ was selected to represent JCU for the student clinician research program in Atlanta Georgia (2017).
  • 2016 - The above poster presentation received two awards at the College of Medicine and Dentistry’s inaugural Dentistry Clinical day on 22nd October, 2016.
  • 2014 - Travel grant (Australia - New Zealand division of International Association of Dental Research) to attend the “2014 Annual scientific meeting” held in Brisbane.
