About

I am primarily interested in managing risk in complex systems. Systems with many parts display behaviour that is hard, if not impossible to predict by merely looking at its parts. I work to deliver approaches to managing these kind of risks in uncertain systems. I currently teach chemical engineering at James Cook University, and also do research into applying complex systems and complexity science to risk management problems.  I've have completed a PhD in Chemical Engineering, specifically in the field of Hazard Identification (HAZID) practice and theory. My thesis focussed on investigating and strengthening the theory underlying HAZID analysis and adapting this theory to the development of a novel HAZID methodology for direct implementation in industry. This work involved extensive collaboration with BP Refinery (Bulwer Island) Pty Ltd and BlueScope Steel Ltd, Port Kembla Steelworks.
