I am currently employed at The Centre for Tropical Water and Aquatic Ecosystem Research at the James Cook University in Townsville, Queensland Australia. My current research interests are in the sources and fate of pollutants, the management of known and emerging contaminants of concern and the impact of anthropogenic activities on the distribution and remobilization of contaminants within the environment.

While I assist on a number of projects, my primary role is to manage the handling and analysis of environmental samples and results obtained as part of the Herbert Water Quality Monitoring Project. This project will be undertaken over three years and will assess the effect of land use on the transport of sediment, nutrients and pesticides within the Herbert Catchment during wet and dry season’s conditions.

Scientific experience

·The collection of environmental samples; including water, soil, air and biota.

·The preparation and use of passive sampling devices for water and air.

·The extraction and measurement of analytes (including agricultural chemicals, pharmaceuticals and personal care products) from water, soil and air samples.

·The culturing of algae, bacteria and cell lines, as well as the preparation and use of both liquid and solid growth media.

·The determination of the relative toxicity of extracted water samples using a PAM bioassay.

·The reporting of experimental and monitoring results to both my supervisor, research group and the wider scientific community in a written (internal reports, journal articles and poster presentations) or oral format (conference presentations).

·The undertaking of literature reviews and surveys of monitoring programs that were undertaken according to the regulatory guidelines of Australia for use in the development of a resource database.

·The maintenance of a laboratory journal.

·The development of standard operating procedures for methods developed and employed.

·The use of the graphing and statistical program “Graphpad Prism” in the presentation and analysis of results, in addition to the MS Office programs.

This project is the continuation of the Herbert Water Quality Monitoring Program on a reduced scale (only in the lower catchment). The aims of the project are revised to: *Assess the effects sugarcane land use practices on water quality within the Herbert River and on End of Catchment Loads *Provide estimates of annual and daily loads for the Paddock to Reef modellers to help validate Source Catchments Model. *Inform and guide future extension and research activities in the Herbert Catchment to meet Water Quality (WQ) objectives under Reef Plan 2014. * Identify remedial actions that will reduce the effects of degraded WQ and the subsequent impact on Great Barrier Reef Lagoon.
