Juergen Reichardt rejoined JCU (James Cook University; Australia) as an Adjunct Professor in the AITHM (Australian Institute of Tropical Health and Medicine) in retirement.
Juergen most recently served at YachayTech University, founded as the first research-intensive university in Ecuador, as the Vice Chancellor, Research and Innovation, equivalent to the role of a DVC Research in Australia or the UK or VP Research in the US or vice- or prorector for research in Europe. He previously served as the Head of School, Pharmacy and Molecular Sciences, (equivalent to a Dean) at JCU as well as in other functions such as Associate Dean, Research for the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Molecular Sciences.
Furthermore, Juergen has a long scientific career beginning in biochemistry and molecular biology which evolved further into molecular epidemiology as well as his long and enduring commitment to human genetics and human genomics. He got his PhD at Stanford University witrh Paul Berg and postdoced at Baylor College of Medicine. Juergen was an Assistant and Associate Professor at the USC (University of Southern California) Keck School of Medicine and the foundation Plunkett Chair of Molecular Biology (Medicine) in the Faculty off Medicine at the University of Sydney.
Currently, Juergen chairs the Scientific Advisory Committee for the HUGO, the worldwide Human Genome Organization, and he also serves on the he Steering Committee of G2MC, the Global Genomic Medicine Collaborative, the Diagnostic Scientific Committee of IRDiRC, the International Rare Diseases Research Consortium, and various scientific and advisory boards and committees. Juergen cofounded ERCAL (Enfermedades Raras en América Latina y en el Caribe) a group of scientists, clinicians and patient advocates working on rare diseases in Latin America and the Caribbean. Furthermore, Juergen also serves on a dozen editorial boards and regularly reviews grant applications in various countries. He is an Associate Editor of Human Genomics and one of the guest editors for COVID-19 at the same journal.
Lastly, Juergen has lived in seven countries on four continents bringing a truly international perspective to his endeavours.
