Kate Miller is a Senior Lecturer in Microbiology and Immunology in the Discipline of Biomedicine within the College of Public Health, Medical and Veterinary Sciences. She is also a member of the Australian Institute of Tropical Health and Medicine. She received her PhD from the Australian National University in 1992 for an investigation in to the development of drug resistance in sheep liver fluke. To enable her to continue her research into parasites and their interactions with their hosts she was awarded a number of postdoctoral positions at The University of Queensland and the University of Technology, Sydney. She was appointed to James Cook University (Cairns) in 2011 where she teaches Immunology and Microbiology to Bachelor of Nursing Science and Bachelor of Dental Surgery students. Her research still investigates the interactions of parasites with their hosts but her scope has broadened to investigating the initiation of inflammation in response to harmful stimuli and how this may be regulated by the body. More recently this has included investigation of the body's response to placement of dental implants and the process of osseointegration.
