I am an Associate Professor of mechanical engineering in Matter & Materials Deparment of the College of Science, Technology & Engineering at James Cook University in Townsville, Australia. I received my B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees in mechanical engineering from Huazhong University of Science & Technology in Wuhan, China. Subsequently, I started my academic and industrial R&D career at universities and government laboratories in five countries on three continents, including Tianjin University in Tianjin, China; Kumamoto University in Kumamoto, Japan; Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas, USA; the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia; the National Institute of Standards & Technology in Gaithersburg, Maryland, USA; and Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology in Singapore.
My research focuses on multiscale structure-property-process relations of a wide spectrum of engineering, dental and biological hard tissue materials. These materials have applications in optics, semiconductors, mechanical structures, dental restorations, osteoporosis/osteoarthritis studies, and marine/animal sciences. Much of my research involves collaborations with scholars or practitioners in dentistry, anatomy, orthopedic surgery, tribology, and zoology. I have published over 100 publications including some 80 refereed journal papers and 7 book chapters, and produced 2 patents and a dozen industrial project reports. I am a senior member of the North American Manufacturing Research Institution of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (NAMRI/SME); a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the Optical Society of America (OSA), the American Ceramic Society (Acers), ASM International (ASM), and the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE).
