Maddy is Senior Curator Maritime Archaeology in the Cultures and Histories Program at the Museum of Tropical Queensland, Townsville. Her post is a joint appointment with James Cook University's College of Arts, Society & Education where she is engaged in research, supervision and guest teaching.

Maddy joined the Queensland Museum Network in January 2017. As an archaeologist with five years of experience working in the university and consultancy sector Maddy’s research has focused on Australia, in particular South Australia. Her wider interests include maritime cultural landscapes in Australia’s historical period and decolonising Australian maritime archaeology through the representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in research.

Her doctoral study addressed neglected narratives through the maritime cultural landscape of Point Pearce Aboriginal Mission (Burgiyana). This study also inspired the co-curated exhibition ‘Children, Boats and “Hidden Histories”: Crayon drawings by Aboriginal children at Point Pearce Mission, 1939’. From 2012 she has worked as an academic staff member in the Department of Archaeology and continues to have a strong partnership with Flinders University as an Associate Lecturer.

Maddy is interested in developing collaborative research projects with Indigenous communities, curators and scholars and has worked closely with the Narungga community in South Australia (2012-present).
