Dr Mary Bonin studies coral reef ecology, with particular expertise in the effects of competition and habitat degradation on coral reef fish populations.

Her research is motivated by innate curiosity as well as a keen interest in answering questions that can inform the conservation and managment of coral reef ecosystems. To that end,  she has collaborated on numerous projects in Australia and Papua New Guinea that monitor marine reserves, and examine larval connectivity of both expoited and unexploited coral reef fish species across marine reserve networks.

Future areas of research interest include:

  1. Seascape ecology - How does seascape structure influence coral reef fish populations, and the effectiveness of marine reserves?
  2. Crown-of-thorns starfish - How can we effectively manage COTS outbreaks to minimise their impact on coral reef habitats?

  • larval connectivity
  • crown-of-thorns starfish
  • habitat loss and fragmentation
  • marine reserves
