New methods for conserving dispersing species on coral reefs

$760,000 over 5 years
Marine species commonly spend a larval life-stage dispersing in the open ocean. Dispersal has important implications for biodiversity conservation, but our understanding of where larvae go is currently limited by sparse data and unvalidated models. This Fellowship will develop novel mathematical methods for predicting the larval dispersal patterns of reef fish and corals across entire seascapes. Applied to extensive case-studies from Australia and across the western Pacific Ocean, these methods will be used to forecast and understand the recovery of fish and coral populations following severe disturbances, including the catastrophic 2016 mass coral bleaching in the Great Barrier Reef. .
