Rie obtained Master's degree at James Cook University where she investigated Growth Layer Groups (GLGs) of dugong tusks as a proxy for their reproductive history. She continued working on dugongs and completed her PhD in Sept 2015 on "Linking wildlife tracking data with environmental features to improve understanding of dugong diving ecology and population size estimates". During her PhD candidature, she was involved in long term dugong monitoring programs along Queensland coast from Moreton Bay to Torres Strait in 2011 and 2013 as a survey observer, a leader and a data analyst.

She works as a StatsHelp adviser at Graduate Research School and provides statistical assistance to HDR students.
