About

My broad interests are in ecosystem dynamics, primary productivity and nutrient cyling and I have studied these across a wide diversity of ecosystems. I started looking at nutrient cycling and algal blooms in a large freshwater lake in Western Australia, then studied primary productivity in an estuary (and the potential impacts of dredging for mineral sands). While at Monash University, Victoria, I studied primary productivity and nutrient availability in Bass Strait, and the ecology of salt marsh species.

In north Queensland, my research group has focussed on nutrient cycling in tropical rainforests and timber plantations. We have also examined impacts of the Burdekin River Irrigation Area on water quality of wetlands, and some aspects of mine-site rehabilitation, weed ecology, and the fire ecology of tropical savannas. Student projects have also examined the ecology of hemi-epiphytes, palms and regeneration in tropical forests.

Interests
Research
  • Currently my research focus is on the role of reafforestation in rehabilitating catchments in the Philippines. This ACIAR-funded project involves a large multi-disciplinary team from several universities. My main role is in establishing a nutrient-analysis facility at Visayas State University, Leyte, to enable the study of nutrient cycling through vegetation, soil and water. I am looking for research students with an interest in studying soil nutrient availability in different catchments, and phosphorus uptake and nutrient use efficiency of the main timber species.
