- The main line of research is the use of Laser in Endodontics and Antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy as an adjunct to endodontic treatment in microbial elimination and the use of new endodontic instruments in the chemical-mechanical preparation of the root canal system, with emphasis on microbiology.

- Research Project financed by Grants, 2017–2020: Quantitative Assessment of the Efficacy of Two Different Single-file Systems in Reducing the Bacterial load in Oval-Shaped Canals: A Clinical Study. This study was supported by grants from Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - Brasil (CAPES), Finance Code 001 and by Fundo de incentivo a Pesquisa (FIPE) from Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais.

Dr Rodrigo Amaral is the Discipline lead in endodontics at James Cook University. He joined the College of Medicine and Dentistry in 2022. He was granted the Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais, followed by a Master of Sciences (Endodontics) and a Doctor of Philosophy at the same institution with high distinction. He received the title Specialist in Endodontics from the Brazilian Association of Dentistry and the Federal Council of Dentistry in Brazil.
Dr Amaral started his career as Lieutenant Dentist of the Brazilian Army at the Medical Station of the 4th Military Region in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. He worked as a general dentist and endodontist for seven years, supporting staff hospitals, battalions and dental centres. He was awarded Honor to Merit for the services provided to the Institution and the Military Family.
Over the past 28 years in Brazil, he was in charge of his private dental clinic, committed to providing patients with a high standard of care.
He started his teaching career as an Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Endodontics specialization course at Newton Paiva University Centre, Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
Dr Amaral was granted a scholarship from the Ministry of Education in Brazil, Capes Foundation, for improving Higher Education Personnel to continue his PhD research in Australia. From 2019 to 2022, he worked as Visiting Scholar, Postdoctoral Researcher Fellow and Pre-Clinical Supervisor at the School of Medicine and Dentistry at Griffith University, Gold Coast, Australia.
