Professor Stephen Boyle is Dean of the College of Business, Law and Governance at James Cook University. Prior to that he was Dean:Academic at the University of South Australia Business School.
Professor Stephen Boyle trained originally as a musician completing an Honours degree in Music Performance at the University of Adelaide and worked with many national and international artists during his career. He undertook his MBA at UniSA and then completed his PhD in cultural economics at Macquarie University. He studied with cultural economist, Professor David Throsby examining the economics of symphony orchestras in Australia. Professor Stephen Boyle won best paper in the Economic Papers journal in 2012 for his work on productivity analysis of symphony orchestras. Prior to his role as Dean: Academic of the UniSA Business School, he was the inaugural Academic Director of UniSA College which he established to provide pathways for non-traditional students to successfully enter university. He was also instrumental in establishing the James Morrison Academy of Music @ UniSA. Professor Stephen Boyle's teaching and research interests are in cultural policy, arts management and the creative economy. He chaired the 41st International Conference on Social Theory, Politics and the Arts and is an Executive Editor of the Journal of Arts Management, Law and Society. He is an Adjunct Researcher at the Culture and Leisure Industry Research Centre at the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) in Beijing, China. He is also a Visiting Professor at UIBE where he teaches classes in the Creative Industries in the Asia Pacific Region.
