About

Associate Professor Suzanne McKenzie is the Head of the Discipline of General Practice and Rural Medicine and Director of Clinical Studies.

She has experience in general practice based research, using quantitative (including cluster randomized trials), qualitative and mixed methodologies. She has received multiple research grants; published in national and international peer reviewed journals; and has extensive conference presentations. Research interests include the prevention of chronic disease, especially cardiovascular disease; the role of shared decision making in multidisciplinary teams and individual consultations; and the role of mental health in chronic disease prevention. She also has experience in all aspects of undergraduate, post-graduate and vocational medical education including curriculum development, implementation, delivery, assessment and evaluation.

In addition she has maintained an active clinical load by working in a range of general practices in both urban and rural locations in NSW and Victoria, over the past 20 years, and more recently in Townsville, Qld.  All have provided comprehensive care to their community.

She is currently a member of the RACGP North Queensland Sub-Faculty and the North Queensland Assessment Panel Chair; a member of the Townsville Mackay Medicare Local Clinical Reference Group; and the Treasurer of the Australasian Association of Academic Primary Care. She has participated in a range of committees developing clinical practice guidelines for chronic diseases such as osteoarthritis and diabetes.
