Born, brought up and worked in rural China, I understand the hardship farmers have to go through and endure. This rural experience has led me to devoting myself to work that can help to improve the lives of farmers and the development of rural communities.
Over the past three decades, my research has focused on food production and consumption, food security, rural development, agricultural trade, and agribusiness institutions. My ultimate desire to conduct research lies in making a contribution to the exploration of possible ways to promote a balance between the developed and developing countries of the world and a sustainable development of the whole international community.
I have published widely in national and international scholarly academic journals and have written several books. I am on editorial and reviewer panels of several journals. Recently, I had three books published, “Developing Successful Agriculture: An Australian Case Study” (by CAB International in UK, 2012), “Agriculture in Australia” (by China Agricultural Press, in Chinese, 2013),“Food Consumption in China: The Revolution Continues” (by Edward Elgar in UK, 2014).
Currently, I am Professor in Business Studies at the School of Business at James Cook University. I am the Director for the AusAsia Business Studies Program at James Cook University. Previously, I was the Founding Director of the Asian Agribusiness Research Centre at the University of Sydney.
As a chief investigator, I have led a number of projects supported by various funding bodies, majority of the funding being national competitive grants. The recently completed project is on Food Consumption Trends in China, supported by the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF).
