Description
Descriptions
  1. Type: full

Modern Arnis is a style of martial arts that originated in the Philippines and incorporates stick fighting with traditional martial arts exercises. It is a style of martial arts that is specifically suited to adult learners. However, as a certified trainer of Modern Arnis with 24 years of experience across various styles of Karate, Judo, Bo Staff, Jujitsu, and Modern Arnis this was clearly not enough to attract and keep students in a proposed Modern Arnis martial arts class in Townsville, North Queensland. The trainer’s intention was to start a Modern Arnis School that specifically caters for adults, primarily those over the age of 45. While these qualifications provided the level of skill and understanding necessary to initiate a Modern Arnis school, it was insufficient to effectively engage adult learners in the classes.

This project explores the pedagogical principles the trainer used to structure the classes to suit adult learners, and which lead to success. They include self-directing, autonomous learning, goal orientation, clear cut objectives, respect for adult learners' contributions and social interaction. The dataset includes video footage of each of the 60 skills required to move from white to black belt in Modern Arnis, opening and ending interviews with the trainer/author, a literature review and training manual. The ending interview is the author's exegesis (explanation or interpretation of a text) and includes pedagogical principles as they relate to teaching adults in his Arnis class.
