Field Facilites and Resources

We are surrounded at close proximity by a range of diverse diverse tropical land and seascapes. James Cook University has capitalized on its location in the tropics through the development of well equipped field stations within easy reach in order to capitalize on its location adjacent to two World-heritage listed reef and rainforest areas and a range of drier tropical savannas:

The Daintree Rainforest Observatory (DRO) - based around a construction crane that gives access to one hectare of world-heritage listed rainforest canopy. The DRO recently received 9.34 million dollars in Federal government funds and  is currently being upgraded into a 40 bed research and teaching  facility...

The Orpheus Island Research Station - located on one of the idyllic islands of the Great Barrier Reef, this marine research station is well equipped to accommodate both researchers and education groups....

Fletcherview Research Station - a working cattle property in the savanna country 98km SW of Townsville...

Cloncurry Research Station - a field facility for geological research in the arid zone, 800km west of Townsville...

Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network FNQ Supersite - TERN is a National integrated network designed to serve ecosystem research in Australia. JCU runs the far north Queensland supersite with nodes at Robson Creek and the DRO...

The Australian Tropical Herbarium - brings together the tropical plant specimen collections of the Australian National Herbarium (Atherton), the Queensland Herbarium (Mareeba) and the JCU Herbarium to form one of Australia’s largest and most diverse collections of tropical plant specimens...

Analytical Facilities

TESS researchers have access to world class analytical capabilities, generally within a few hours drive of field sites:

Advanced Analytical Centre (Cairns) - stable isotope mass spectrometry, CHNOS elemental analysis, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, hydrogen pyrolysis, wavelength scanning cavity ringdown spectrometry, gas chromatography mass spectrometry, field environmental monitoring, greenhouse gas flux determination...

Advanced Analytical Centre (Townsville) - Atomic Force microscopy, electron microprobe, laser scanning confocal microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Inductively coupled elemental and isotope analysis (ICP-AES, ICP-MS, MC-ICP-MS), gas and liquid chromatography, x-ray diffraction and x-ray fluorescence...

Dendrochronology Laboratory - Equipment for ring width measurement and microsampling for the development of proxies of past climate from the tree-rings and chemistry of tropical plants, including trees and cactus...
