The Estuary and Coastal Wetlands Ecosystem Research Group is an active collaboration of established scientists and new enthusiastic researchers specialising in cross disciplinary research into the ecological functioning of tropical estuaries and coastal wetlands. As well as conducting a diversity of research, the group provides expert consultancy services in estuaries and coastal wetlands, and fisheries ecology, as well as specialist university-level teaching in estuarine and coastal ecosystem ecology and advanced biological statistics. Mission Statement

The Estuary and Coastal Wetlands Ecosystem Research Group’s mission is to provide valid, detailed and relevant knowledge to support management in ensuring estuarine and coastal ecosystems remain sustainable and resilient into the future.

Estuary and Coastal Wetlands Ecosystem Research Group

Our research centres on understanding the ecological and fisheries values of tropical estuaries and coastal wetlands at habitat, assemblage, and ecosystem scales. Focal topics include understanding the processes driving: the spatial ecological pattern and temporal dynamics, the functioning of interconnected ecosystem mosaics, nursery ground utilisation, and life-history specific habitat utilisation, as well as investigating how to maximise the ecological and fisheries values of human constructed seascapes, and how to repair damage to critical estuarine and coastal habitats.

Overarching all this is the aim of developing the knowledge base required to underpin the rational environmental management needed to ensure healthy coastal ecosystems functioning continues in the face of the challenges of human development, population growth and climate change.

The Estuary and Coastal Wetlands Ecosystem research group is part of the TropWATER Research Centre and the School of Marine and Tropical Biology at James Cook University, with laboratories in the cities of Townsville and Cairns in north Queensland, Australia. The research team is led by Professor Marcus Sheaves, and comprises university academic staff, research fellows and higher degree students (PhD, MSc, honours).
