Dr. Mason Campbell is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Centre for Tropical Environmental and Sustainability Science (TESS) at James Cook University (JCU) in Cairns, Australia. He examines human land-use impacts on tropical plant and animal communities and has a strong passion for the conservation of natural tropical ecosystems. He aims to use his research as a means for both understanding human impacts on natural communities and to devise mitigation strategies capable of real world implementation. To achieve this he actively engages with a wide range of stakeholders and ensures his scientific findings are disseminated to the broadest possible audience by producing both scientific and popular outputs and through continued community engagement. Mason loves living and working in the tropics and sincerely believes that the biggest conservation gains still await us if we can provide sound scientific evidence to decision makers thereby enabling a sustainable balance between the conservation of the magnificent natural tropical ecosystems and the competing demands of rapidly growing populations and economies.
Mason is currently the field director of a team examining environmental impacts and economic benefits of road infrastructure projects in the Asia-Pacific region. Their work provides a determination of optimal future road locations to minimize environmental degradation whilst maximizing economic development. Prior to this, Mason received his PhD from James Cook University, Australia in 2016. His award-winning PhD research examined how lianas respond to rainforest fragmentation. Within that topic he focused on determining the anthropogenic impact of both local and landscape scale habitat perturbations on liana ecology and examined how habitat fragmentation altered liana/tree interactions within remnant rainforest fragments.
