About

Karnika Bansal is a Law Lecturer in the College of Business, Law, and Governance. In 2023, she submitted her PhD thesis in copyright law at Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne, where she also taught diverse law subjects as part of their undergraduate programs since 2019. Karnika holds a Master of Laws in Intellectual Property (IP) from Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, and a Bachelor of Laws with Economic Honours from Panjab University, India.

Before relocating to Australia in 2017, she practised as an IP lawyer at a law firm in India. During her tenure, she supported the firm's copyright and trademark litigation teams and provided counsel to music studios and IT companies on IP contracts and litigation strategies.

In terms of research, Karnika explores the intricate dynamics between industry and performers' rights within the context of copyright law. Her PhD thesis and publications focus on both national and international copyright regulations, delving into the multifaceted relationship that connects the entertainment industry with legal frameworks. Other areas of expertise and research interests include the convergence of copyright law and artificial intelligence, the protection of indigenous art and culture through IP, and concerns related to the commercialisation of intellectual property.

Drawing from a comprehensive background in both practical and academic aspects of law, Karnika offers a distinct perspective to her research and teachings in the legal field.
