I arrived at JCU on July 16, 1973, 5 days after submitting my PhD thesis at Adelaide Uinversity. I became a Reader in 1984 and was very privileged to be offered a Personal  Chair in 1996 that one could not apply for. I set out from the start to establish a world class Structural Geology/Metamorphism research group with the help of 66 PhD students from around the world (the first graduated in 1981 and the last in 2014) plus 10 research fellows. A major aim was to work on mountain belts everywhere that that contained porphyrobblasts and ore deposits (believe it or not they can have similar origins).
