About

I work as an academic in the General Practice and Rural Medicine discipline for the School of Medicine and Dentistry at James Cook University.

I teach communication skills, health inequality, cultural and linguistically diverse population groups, and health behaviour and behaviour change, in first year of the Bachelor of Medicine.

In the postgraduate Masters of Health Professioanl Education, and Masters of Rural and Remote Health I teach negotiation and dispute resolution.

I also coordinate the Home Group program across years 1 to 3. The program provides an avenue for small group facilitated pastoral care, clinical support and teaching and learning support.

I am the Program Manager for the Training for Health Equity Network, a collaborative international NGO engaging in the challenge of transforming health professional institutions to meet the needs of the community.

Interests
Research
  • My specific research interests are of sustainable health professional education in Social Accountability, community engagement in rural and remote health, and translating research to practice. I am the Program Manager for the International Non-Government Organisation - The Training for Health Equity Network (www.thenetcommunity.org)
Teaching
  • I am particularly interested in the First year Experience of students. As the Home Group Program Coordinator, I am undertaking ongoing rigorous quality assurance to ensure the pastoral care aspects as well as educational content is up to date, integrates with the curriculum, and progresses from Year 1 to Year 3. The organisation of the Home Group Program is also being redefined, so too is the training of facilitators to build best practice for communication and facilitation.
